High expectations, a nurturing ethos and a highly-effective curriculum have led to an Outstanding award for a Newcastle school.
St Mary’s Catholic School received the highest Ofsted judgement of ‘Outstanding’ for all five key areas with a glowing report praising students, leaders, the staff team and the wider school family.

It was time for drinks, cake and other home-made treats, when a Hunstanton secondary school held its latest charity fundraising venture. Seventeen altruistic students at Smithdon High School hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, collecting over £160 for the UK cancer care support charity. A West Norfolk school is seeing such progress in its students that it’s been highlighted by Ofsted as being in the top 20 per cent of all state schools nationally. Marshland High School, a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, had a Progress 8 score of 0.42 for its latest GCSE results which means students make more academic progress from Year 7 to Year 11 than the vast majority of other state school cohorts. Young thespians had the opportunity to tread the boards with the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company when they performed one of the Bard’s most infamous plays at the Northern Stage. The Year 3 and 4 pupils from St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School in Newcastle took part in the well-known Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth, thanks to the RSC’s long running Associate Schools Programme. A West Norfolk artist and teacher who appeared on TV’s Landscape Artist of the Year, and was shortlisted for the prestigious Sir John Hurt Art Prize, has curated a London art exhibition featuring the work of over 120 artists. Lee Eveson, Head of Art and Photography at Springwood High School in King’s Lynn, creates under the name EVES, and is known outside of the classroom for his acrylic and spray paint works, which are inspired by the Norfolk landscape. Tigers may not be indigenous to Northumberland, but one school has been overrun by the fearsome felines. Children from Reception to Year 4 at St Robert’s First School in Morpeth spent a week working on Tigers in Our Town – an art project which saw the school building transformed into a gallery featuring 150 pieces of tiger-related artwork. Caring children have marked the seasonal celebration of the Harvest Festival by collecting food for distribution. The pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Cullercoats, took part in the charitable venture to support The Bay Foodbank, collecting a wide range of donated items to help families in the community. A teacher who grew up without inspirational role models is ensuring that students at her school have a different experience. As part of Black History Month, which takes as its theme this year ‘Saluting Our Sisters’, Debi Benson is leading a four-week celebration of Black British women and their achievements. |
