Young readers and writers at a Whitley Bay primary school were inspired by a visit from a children’s author.
The pupils at Star of the Sea, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, spent an afternoon with Will Mabbitt, whose books include I Can Only Draw Worms, This is Not a Fairy Tale, and The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones.

A West Norfolk school that raised over £2,500 for a local hospice received a visit from the grateful charity. Gaywood Primary School, a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, raised £2,586 for The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House last month, making them the biggest fundraiser among the schools that took part in the charity’s Rudolph Run. A King’s Lynn school known for its strength in music is opening its doors to musicians in the wider community. Springwood High School, a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, is launching two new Community Musical Ensembles, which will be open not only to students but also to adults in the West Norfolk area. Young readers in Whitley Bay were celebrating after their school won £1,000 worth of book tokens – just in time to stock up its new library.
Star of the Sea Primary School, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, entered the National Book Tokens prize draw competition after a teaching assistant saw it promoted on Twitter. A former hairdresser has won an award for her exceptional work as a carer. Amanda Hathaway, who works at Norfolk home care provider Extra Hands, won the company’s GEM Award for ‘going the extra mile’ in caring and supporting service users. ‘Going the extra mile’ to beat some stiff competition, the winners of the January GEM Awards at a Norfolk home care company have been announced. Carer Tracey Sanchez took the honour at the Horsham St Faith office of Extra Hands, following a nomination from the family of a grateful service user. And in Heacham, the winner was Amanda Hathaway. High achieving students in King’s Lynn celebrated their successes at a presentation evening held in their honour. Sixth formers past and present from Springwood High School, which is a member of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, were joined by around 200 family members, friends, staff, governors, Rotary Club representatives and prize sponsors, as well as guest speaker and Springwood alumnus Alex Kendal. After two years with no stage shows, drama students in Wisbech have been rehearsing hard for High School Musical which will open later this year. The annual production has been a key part of life at Thomas Clarkson Academy for many years, but the last was in 2019 and the arrival of the pandemic meant there have been no performances since. |
